How to Win Friends and Influence G-d: Kavod Ha-Briot

Despite a warning from His ministering angels that the creation of man would result in sin and falsehood (Bereishit Rabbah 8:5) G-d proceeded with the creation of humankind and our world, saying  “All that is called by My name, for My kavod (My honor) I have created it.” Yoma 38a

So God constricts His own Essence (tsimtsum), so to speak, in order to make possible the existence of flesh and blood human beings with free choice, created in His own image (Genesis 1:27), with a Divine soul, yet clothed in a physical body. He hopes that ultimately man will be able to say: “From my flesh I will see G-d.” (Job 19:26)

G-d in His Essence cannot be identified with any attributes or needs. (Moreh Nevuchim 1:57) Yet, He chooses a human being through whom to manifest His own honor, imbuing him with attributes emanating from the light of His own Essence.

The human being’s task is “to transform darkness into light and bitterness into sweetness” (Zohar 1:49) and to bring all of humankind to sanctify the Divine name (Zohar 3:231a).
